The full winter stay you are planning, in days.

Include every trip abroad this year. Ontario's guideline is no more than 212 days away in any 12-month period.

How the strategy works

One winter, several trips

An annual multi-trip plan covers an unlimited number of trips for a year, up to a per-trip day limit you choose (commonly 30, 60 or 90 days). The 60-day split structures a long winter as back-to-back 60-day trips: you return to Canada between segments, and each return starts a fresh trip under the plan. Because annual plans are priced per year rather than per day, the total can come in below a single 180-day policy, and the plan also covers every other trip you take that year.

When the split does not fit: if you do not want to fly home mid-winter, the split cannot work as separate trips. In that case compare a long single-trip policy against a single-trip policy plus a top-up instead. Top-ups extend one continuous trip and generally must be arranged before the original policy expires.

Return resets the trip

Each segment generally needs to be a new trip departing from Canada for the per-trip limit to reset. Check your policy wording.

💊

Stability resets too

Pre-existing condition stability is typically measured from each departure date. A mid-winter medication change can affect the next segment.

OHIP counts total days

Splitting changes your insurance structure, not your residency math. Ontario still counts every day away toward the 212-day guideline.

Common questions

60-day split questions

What is the 60-day split strategy for snowbirds?

Instead of buying one long single-trip policy for the whole winter, you structure the stay as multiple trips of 60 days or less on an annual multi-trip plan, returning to Canada between segments. Each return starts a new trip under the plan's per-trip limit.

Does splitting a long stay into 60-day trips save money?

It can. Annual multi-trip plans are priced per year rather than per day, so two or three 60-day segments sometimes cost less than a single 180-day policy. Whether it wins depends on your age, health, destination and the insurer, so compare both structures with real quotes before deciding.

Do I have to return to Canada between 60-day segments?

Generally yes. For the annual plan's per-trip limit to reset, each segment generally needs to be a new trip departing from Canada. Check your policy wording, because some plans define this differently.

How do pre-existing conditions work with split trips?

Stability clauses are typically measured from each departure date. A medication change or new symptom mid-winter can therefore affect coverage for the next segment, so disclose any health changes before each departure.

Can I top up a multi-trip plan instead of splitting?

Top-ups extend a single trip rather than splitting it, and multi-trip top-ups generally must be purchased before departure. If you want one continuous stay without returning to Canada, a top-up or a long single-trip policy is usually the cleaner structure. See our top-up guide.

Does splitting trips affect my OHIP eligibility?

No. Ontario counts total days outside the province, not number of trips. The guideline is no more than 212 days away in any 12-month period, and at least 153 days physically present in Ontario, regardless of how you structure your travel insurance. See our OHIP 212-day rule guide.
